Kamala Harris is the first black woman to lead the presidential nomination of a major party

Vice President Kamala Harris officially accepted the Democratic nomination for president yesterday, making her the first black woman and the first Asian American to head a major party’s nomination list.

During her appearance at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night, Harris said: “On behalf of the people, on behalf of every American, regardless of party affiliation, race, gender, or the language your grandmother speaks; on behalf of my mother and everyone who has ever embarked on their own extraordinary journey; on behalf of Americans like the ones I grew up with, people who work hard, pursue their dreams, and look out for one another; on behalf of everyone whose history could only be written in the greatest nation on earth. I accept your nomination for President of the United States of America.”

Of course, Harris is used to making history. She was the first woman, the first Black woman and the first South Asian to ever become Vice President of the United States. She broke those same barriers in California when she became that state’s Attorney General. And she remains today only one of three Black women in the United States Senate. Should Harris become president, she would not only break what Hillary Clinton has often called the “highest, hardest” glass ceiling, but she would also usher in an entirely new vision of what the First Family can look like, as she is married to Doug Emhoff, the first Jewish spouse of a Vice President, who could become the first-ever First Gentleman. Harris is also known as “Momala” to her stepchildren, Cole and Ella.

Harris has only about three months left to make her case to the country. Just a month ago, President Joe Biden was the Democratic nominee until he dropped out of the race on July 21 and endorsed Harris. The President tweeted: “My very first decision as a party candidate in 2020 was to select Kamala Harris as my vice president. And it was the best decision I made. Today, I want to express my full support and endorsement of Kamala becoming our party’s nominee this year.”

Harris then asked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to be her running mate, and in November they will face former President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance. Trump formally accepted his party’s nomination on July 19 during the Republican National Convention, two days before Biden dropped out and six days after a gunman shot Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania. At the convention, Trump told his supporters, “Despite such a heinous attack, we stand united tonight, more determined than ever. I am more determined than ever and so are you… Our resolve is unwavering and our goal is unchanged, to create a government that serves the American people better than ever before.”

In her speech, Harris also advocated for a united country, saying: “I promise to be a president for all Americans. You can always count on me to put the country above my party and my own interests.”
