WAILUKU–Hawai’i Realtors, a leading national real estate industry professional organization, has launched its 2024 annual Keiki Art Contest to teach children about fair housing.
With the topic “Living diversity: housing for all”, The competition recognizes the importance of the Fair Housing Act, which was enacted in April 1968. The law helps prevent discrimination in the housing market by ensuring equal access when renting or buying a home, taking out a mortgage, applying for housing assistance, or engaging in other housing-related activities.
“Hawai’i REALTORS® encourages everyone in Hawaii to learn about fair housing and the importance of housing laws that protect families from discrimination when renting or buying a home,” said Julie Meier, president of Hawai’i REALTORS®.
The National Association of REALTORS® offers virtual resources and training for REALTORS® on fair housing practices as well as additional information on the Fair Housing Act.
The annual Keiki Art Contest is free and open to all students in preschool through 8th grade in Hawai’i. There are two categories: preschool through 4th and 5th through 8th grade. First place winners in each category receive $250, second place winners receive $150, and third place winners receive $75. Honorable mentions are also awarded. The deadline to submit artwork is October 31, 2024, and winners will be announced by the end of November 2024. First place winners’ artwork will also appear in a printed 2025 Hawai’i Realtors calendar.
Submissions must be original, on paper, and no larger than 8 ½ x 11 inches. Acceptable media include paint, pencil, marker, ink, colored pencil, and watercolor. Entries may be submitted online or mailed to Hawai’i Realtors. The official entry form and guidelines can be found at www.hawaiirealtors.com/keikiartcontest.
