Kirk Ferentz sheds light on the state of Iowa football’s RB room

For one reason or another, the Iowa Hawkeyes running back team has been plagued by a number of injuries over the past few seasons.

With the 2024 college football season quickly approaching, things are moving in a positive direction in that regard. The Hawkeyes should be able to field a full, healthy roster of running backs in their season opener against Illinois State.

During his press conference, Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz provided information about the status and health of the Iowa players.

Ferentz told the media that Leshon Williams, who is listed as a starting running back in the latest rankings, has recovered well from an injury layoff with a few good days in a row.

Ferentz also added that Kamari Moulton, a redshirt freshman from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is the only running back who is currently unhealthy but expects to be ready to play next week to prepare for Illinois State.

Williams and Moulton, the first and third backs, push Kaleb Johnson into the lineup, completing Iowa’s top three backs. All three can expect to see action this season, along with explosive sophomore Jaziun Patterson.

The four-headed monster consisting of Williams, Johnson, Moulton and Patterson each had at least 27 runs last year and each reached the end zone at least once.

Together, the quartet made 372 runs for 1,652 yards and eight touchdowns.
