The Witcher 4 will likely be a few years away, and not many details have been announced yet. One of the most difficult elements that CD Projekt RED has to deal with is the departure of Geralt as the protagonist. As a popular character and iconic player character that defines The Sorcerer in many ways to create new games in The Sorcerer Franchise without its leading actor seems to be an impossible task.
One character who could carry Geralt’s torch is Ciri, which would solve the mystery of finding the face of The Sorcerer series while also focusing the story on someone else. Ciri is a compelling character in her own right and is more than capable of The Witcher 4 as a player character. However, it would be odd to have a story focused on Ciri that doesn’t even mention Geralt. Including Geralt would create a connection for old players while also giving Ciri, and therefore a new protagonist, a chance to take center stage.

Ciri’s role in The Witcher 3
Some rumors suggest that the player character of The Witcher 4 could be Ciri. Including Ciri as the protagonist of The Witcher 4 would be a fantastic compromise to keep fans who want familiarity, while at the same time The Sorcerer a new direction.
Ciri is a character who lies between both worlds, as she plays a central role in Geralt’s story and yet follows her own path and has multiple endings.
The Witcher 3
There she is influenced by Geralt, although it feels like her decisions are ultimately in her hands.
Players of The Witcher 3 are of course nothing new for Ciri as a playable character. There are sections in The Witcher 3 where Ciri is controlled by the player and in these sections Ciri has her own skills and magic. Players can also choose her dialogues and play Ciri just like Geralt, however it is not possible to improve her skills.
Ciri’s fighting skills and magic
Ciri’s gameplay sections of The Witcher 3 were well received by many players, probably because of Ciri’s likeability as a character, her abilities and because by allowing players to play these sections, CD Projekt RED was able to show her parts of the story instead of telling them. Not all of this can be seen in The Witcher 4but Ciri has already shown her potential as a protagonist and her ability to direct a story.
If Ciri is the protagonist of The Witcher 4this would also solve the problem of completely excluding Geralt from the franchise in the future. Geralt is a central part of Ciri’s life, and it would be impossible to develop a game with Ciri as the protagonist without at least mentioning Geralt. Although Geralt is not the main character of The Witcher 4he could play a similar role to Ciri in The Witcher 3and may even have dedicated gameplay segments for parts of the story.
With Ciri as the protagonist of The Witcher 4 is nothing unusual, as some fans have speculated that Ciri’s incredible magical abilities and unique powers could see her face off against unique enemies like Gaunter O’Dimm. Since she also received witcher training and one of her endings involves her starting a life on the Path, there should be no reason to necessitate a title change.
