Let your whimsical side run free: Graves County Public Library hosts garden party | News

MAYFIELD, Kentucky – The Graves County Public Library is hosting a garden party on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. – the library invites community members ages 13 and older to a history-themed evening of food, crafts, activities, dancing, live music and more.

Tessa Sanders, GCPL’s adult and youth programs librarian, explained that her stylistic choices this year were “loosely inspired” by the hit Netflix series “Bridgerton,” in which genteel characters enjoy formal gatherings in gardens.

Sanders pointed out that a key difference is that the event is free and open to the public, allowing everyone the opportunity to interact in an environment that is normally considered too luxurious or exclusive.

The event will take place in the library’s large training room, which is connected to a closed part of the facility’s garden and fountain.

The event’s aesthetic influences range from 1770 to 1900, spanning eras such as Victorian, Jane Austen’s Regency, and Marie Antoinette’s Rococo.

Sanders said she doesn’t necessarily strive for historical accuracy, but rather emulates the quirky setting of each era, maintaining the atmosphere with “safe” LED candles and a piano player to transport guests to another time.

Guests can enjoy live music from Ryan Henderson, a local resident who Sanders said has a musical background and adds a “classical touch” to popular modern songs.

The dress code discourages t-shirts, flip-flops and pajamas. To suit the candlelit ball atmosphere, attendees are strongly encouraged to wear semi-formal or period-themed clothing. Otherwise, guests can wear fantasy costumes such as steampunk that still fit the theme.

Sanders advises potential attendees not to be put off by the dress code. They do not have to dress ultra-formal or extreme, but are asked to participate in whatever way they are able.

Participants can also relax at candlelit tables and read maps that illuminate the historical context of specific items.

Graves County Homemakers from the Extension Office will provide finger foods such as sausage balls and dessert pastries. In addition, the library will put together a charcuterie board and serve tea and lemonade.
