NEW YORK – The office of the famous basketball coach of St. John’s University Rick Pitino was broken into.

The break-in occurred on Tuesday evening around 7:30 p.m. According to police, the men gained unauthorized access to the building, but the exact modus operandi was not immediately clear.

Surveillance video captured two suspects holding stolen memorabilia, including a ceremonial sword, a bullhorn, an autographed basketball and more, all from Pitino’s office.

“Property was stolen from an athletic department office. The university has released surveillance footage to the New York Police Department and is assisting with the ongoing investigation,” a university spokesperson said.

According to police, the suspects drove away on a moped heading west on Union Turnpike.

Red Storm sees red because of break-in

The St. John’s Red Storm was red on Thursday.

“If Coach Pitino’s stuff can be stolen so easily, I would be pretty worried about my own stuff,” said student Jack Hance.

“As soon as you enter the campus, you are monitored by cameras and the like, and that is really brazen,” one person said.

“These guys obviously had no fear, it seems. Their faces don’t look nervous. They’re strolling around. That’s an insane level of calm for them,” said another.

Pitino, former head coach of the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics, was only hired by St. John’s last year. He previously won NCAA championships at Kentucky and Louisville, although the latter was vacated. He also coached at Iona in New Rochelle for three seasons.
