Primary Wave acquires publishing and other rights to the entire catalog of “Feels So Good” composer Chuck Mangione

Acquisition-based music company Primary Wave has acquired the publishing rights to the entire catalog of Chuck Mangione, the legendary jazz artist, flugelhorn player and composer behind the hit Feels so good.

The deal also includes Mangione’s writing share, artist royalties and ancillary copyrights, Primary Wave said in a statement on Thursday (August 22).

The price of the deal was not disclosed, but it includes Mangione gaining access to Primary Wave’s marketing team and publishing infrastructure, and he is expected to work with the company on new marketing, branding and synchronization opportunities, as well as film and television rights.

Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs at Primary Wave, Lexi Toddsaid the company “couldn’t be happier” to welcome Mangione to the ranks.

“To this day, Chuck’s music feels like a breath of fresh air and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue breathing new life into these timeless tunes,” she said.

“Chuck’s awards and honors speak for themselves – he is a true master of his craft and an incredible addition to our list of legends.”

Since 1960, Mangione has released more than 30 albums and is known for titles such as Feels so good, Bellavia, Land of Fantasy, Give everything you have, but slowly, Children of Sanchez, Once upon a time of loveAnd Chase away the clouds.

Mangione was nominated for 14 Grammy Awardswon twice: in 1976 for Best Instrumental Composition for Bellaviaand in 1979 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for Children of SanchezIn the same year Feels so good was nominated for Record of the YearThis title reached the top 5 of the US charts and catapulted the album of the same name to number 2 in the Billboard 200.

Mangione has been active in the music scene for five decades and first attracted attention as the trumpet player in the band The Jazz Brothersin which he played with his brother Gap. The band released three albums in the early 1960s. At the same time, Mangione attended the Eastman School of Music in his hometown of Rochester, New York.

He played with a number of other bands before finally signing a contract with Mercury Recordsfrom which albums like Lively! (1972) and Land of Fantasy (1973). He then signed with A&M Recordswhich led to the publication of some of his most popular works, including Chase away the clouds And Bellavia.

Mangione continued working throughout the 1980s and 1990s and only retired from music in 2015. Some relatively younger music fans may know him from King of the Hillwhere he played himself in animated form and composed the score for one of his appearances in the popular animated series.

Proving that he is not above puns, Mangione said: “I am really excited to join the list of iconic artists represented by Primary Wave. It makes me feel so good to be in the company of such great artists and musicians.”

For Primary Wave, this is the latest acquisition in a long line of music rights over the past year, including the catalogue of Nuno Bettencourt the 90s rock band Extreme; a publishing partnership with the alt-rock band The Spin Doctors; and a music rights contract with Neil Finn from Overcrowded house.

The company also signed a contract for the recording, publishing, trademark and image rights of the famous Village People of YMCA; a catalog contract with the estate of the songwriter and musician PF Sloan; and a share in the catalogue of singer/songwriters Neil Sedaka.Music business worldwide
