Back to School Block Party takes place on Saturday in Tompkinsville Park

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Every year, Staten Island’s North Shore hosts a massive back-to-school giveaway that distributes a wide variety of much-needed school supplies — just in time for the first day of school.

And this year, the “really big show,” which quickly turns into a street party and becomes the focal point of the neighborhood, has gotten even bigger with youth activities, music, food and entertainment.

The event will take place on Saturday, August 24th from 1 to 6 p.m. at Tompkinsville Park, 45 Victory Blvd., where there will be plenty of notebooks, book bags, pads, pencils and more.

There are two giant Bouncy World bounce houses, Jump for Joy activities for kids, face painting by Milo Mayhem, a double Dutch rope jump competition and a three-point basketball contest.

Sean White, owner of Against da Grain Barber Shop and community leader, is one of the event’s main sponsors along with Gissy Salon, Bousso’s Salon, SI Fish, the Craft House, Vegan Mike and Mex Media with music by DJ Storm.

The event is hosted by Drewski and Nems.

Chef Nellz, also a sponsor, will provide a buffet and Bayview Dental will hand out gift bags.

As August celebrates Black Excellence and showcases Black businesses in the community, Gissy Cares Inc., Giselle’s nonprofit called Gisselle Lendor, True To You, Help One to Help Another (both nonprofits), and NVE Studios are also contributing to the event.

Following the back-to-school event, there will be an after-party at the Craft House in Stapleton.
