Four-time Warriors champions Draymond Green and DeMarcus Cousins spoke candidly about their time together as players and discussed why people disliked Cousins but loved Green.
Green recalled a conversation he had with his former teammate in 2018 in which the two discussed the difference between attitude and passion – something Draymond didn’t fully understand at the time.
“There is passion and there is attitude. They live in the same house, but the difference is how they are characterized and categorized,” Green said in his eponymous podcast The Draymond Green Show. “I remember you said something to me in 2018, ‘Man, we’re the same. And they say you got passion, and they say I’m crazy, and I’ve got an attitude.’ I said, ‘Cous, you’re f***ing crazy, we’re not the same.’ And what you said was, ‘Nah, but y’all win. So they say your passion is passion. I haven’t won much, so they say mine is an attitude, and I can’t be coached, and I’m crazy, and this and that,’ and I say all that to say, I’m sorry, because you were right.”
Cousins responded, “You get to a point where you learn to control what you can control, and at the end of the day in this life, there are going to be motherfuckers that hate you and there are going to be motherfuckers that love you. That’s the way it goes, no matter how many things you do right. There’s going to be something to hate about what you do. You do it right. That’s the way life is.”
Green was instrumental in the Warriors’ success, but the Warriors failed to win in his final two seasons.
He also got into trouble for fouls on several occasions, most notably during the 2023-24 season, when he was temporarily suspended indefinitely.
Maybe after some thought, Green will finally understand what Boogie meant.
