Big Freedia receives key to the city of New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Big Freedia, a pioneer of bounce music, was awarded the Key to the City of New Orleans by Mayor LaToya Cantrell on Wednesday (Aug. 21). The ceremony took place at Gallier Hall, where Mayor Cantrell recognized Freedia for her remarkable contributions to the city and her impact on the world stage.

In her Instagram post, Mayor Cantrell expressed her admiration for Freedia, writing, “Today I had the incredible honor of presenting the Key to the City of New Orleans to a true New Orleans legend, Big Freedia!”

She continued, “From Uptown to the world stage, Freedia has redefined bounce music and elevated the spirit of our city around the world. As a Grammy winner, passionate LGBTQ+ activist and tireless supporter of the community, Freedia’s impact extends far beyond music.”

Mayor Cantrell emphasized that Freedia “embodies the resilience and creativity that make New Orleans so special.” She concluded her message with heartfelt pride: “Congratulations, Queen Diva! The whole city is proud of you!”
