Animal shelter in Scottsdale threatened with closure

SCOTTDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Desert Tails Shelter, a no-kill animal shelter in Scottsdale, is in danger of closing its doors forever.

In July, the emergency shelter suffered severe storm damage, leading to flooding throughout the building.

They say that at the moment there are simply not enough donations to keep the organization running.

“The thought of it going away is really emotional. It’s been a big rollercoaster ride,” said shelter manager Adama Pfaff.

Since 2018, Desert Tails has helped over 2,000 dogs from rural communities.

The animal shelter has suspended all admissions due to the possible closure. There are 30 dogs that need to be adopted as soon as possible.

“We just need to focus on the dogs we have. It’s not smart and it doesn’t help anyone to get more dogs. More mouths to feed, higher medical costs. Things like that. So that definitely hinders that,” Pfaff said.

The monthly overhead costs of running the shelter are nearly $7,000. If nothing changes, the shelter is expected to close at the end of the year.

“We really want to keep rescuing dogs. There are so many out there that don’t get that help,” Pfaff said.

All dogs are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Puppies cost $350 and adult dogs cost $200.

The shelter says every donation makes a difference. For more information, click/tap here.
