Delta and American Airlines extend suspension of flights to Israel as war in Gaza continues

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Delta Air Lines announced Wednesday that it will extend the suspension of flights to Israel for another month, until Oct. 31, as Israel and the militant group Hamas show no signs of ending the War in the Gaza Strip.

“Delta continuously monitors the evolving security situation and evaluates our operations based on security policies and intelligence reports,” the airline said in a travel advisory.

Delta’s announcement came after American Airlines extended its flight suspension between the United States and Tel Aviv until March 29 next year. American Airlines posted a notice on its website over the weekend.

Both airlines said customers with tickets for flights that are now being cancelled can generally rebook at no additional cost or cancel their trip and receive a refund.

Delta will give its customers the opportunity to Rebooking with partner airlines El Al and Air France. American said it would work with its partners to provide customers with flights between Israel and European cities that offer onward flights to the United States.

Delta, American and United Airlines all suspended flights to Israel shortly after the October 7 Hamas attack that sparked the war. United recently announced that it had suspended service indefinitely.

Many other international airlines also suspended flights to Tel Aviv and other cities in Israel, although some later resumed flights. Airlines still flying to Israel include Israeli airlines El Al, British Airways, Air France, Wizz Air and flydubai.

The German airline Lufthansa announced on Monday that, based on a “current security analysis” It would suspend all flights to the Middle East – Tel Aviv, Amman, Beirut, Tehran and Erbil in Iraq – until Monday.

About 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, died in the first Hamas attack, which was followed by the Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip. 40,000 people have died in the Gaza Strip, according to the Hamas-controlled health ministry there.
