Following the devastating flooding caused by Tropical Storm Debby, the Swift Water Rescue Team of the Bath Volunteer Fire Department was able to rescue four people in Steuben County on Friday. The team was dispatched to the southern part of the county, where emergency responders were overwhelmed due to the widespread impact of the storm.

The first rescue occurred in the town of Jasper, where a person trapped in their home near State Route 36 was safely evacuated. The second rescue involved three people stranded in their submerged pickup truck near County Route 119 in Canisteo. They managed to reach shore before being rescued by the Bath team.

The department highlighted the dangers of navigating floodwaters and urged the public to avoid rescue attempts or traveling through flooded areas. Its message: “Turn back, don’t drown.”
