Job Opening: Defending Big D is Hiring!

Job Opening: Defending Big D is Hiring!

So you want to help keep the Stars flag flying? Here’s your chance to shine!

Last season was a wild ride for the Dallas Stars and their fans. And here at Defending Big D, the challenge of rebuilding an established site on a brand new network made it all the more exciting. We’re gearing up for a big push next season as the Victory Green Gang once again makes a big push for their next Stanley Cup.

The hockey media landscape is changing, and we see this as an opportunity to expand and improve our coverage of the team and find better ways to present that coverage to our readers. That’s where you come in.

DBD is looking for employees. We would like to provide support in three different areas, each with a different amount of time required:

Option 1: Daily Link Contributor

We are looking for dedicated Dallas Stars fans and DBD readers who are interested in contributing to the Daily Links section. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to write about the Stars and hockey and provide an invaluable service to the DBD community.

The job involves collecting links to the stars and stories from the hockey world and publishing 2-3 Daily Links posts per week during the season. (We like to spread these tasks out so no one has to write all the links posts every week.) Here are some key aspects of this position to keep in mind if you are interested:

  • Daily Links posts should be published at 6:00 a.m. CT during the season, so contributors must manage their time accordingly.
  • Each post begins with a short commentary on the day’s top story, so intermediate writing skills and hockey knowledge are helpful.
  • With careful organization, link posts can usually be completed in 30 minutes to an hour.
  • This is a great opportunity to get into writing about the Dallas Stars and will almost certainly lead to an expanded role at DBD in the future.

Option 2: Editor (Functions)

For this position, we need someone who is passionate about the Dallas Stars and wants to share that passion with the wider Stars fanbase. A certain level of hockey IQ is required for this position – we’re looking for you to provide game analysis. Previous writing experience will be considered (this can be through commentary, fan posts, blogging, etc.), so we want to see any articles you’ve already written about the Stars or hockey. This person should be able to come up with unique topics to write about without much direction from the editorial team and follow those ideas through to publication. We’re looking for at least one story per week, and will ask this writer to help out with game previews, recaps, breaking news, and the like as needed, as schedule allows.

Option 3: Summary (after the game)

These staff members will provide near-time recaps of regular season and playoff games. A good knowledge of hockey statistics is an asset for this position, and you must be able to watch games throughout the season. We expect each recapitulator to cover at least 20 games during the 82-game regular season, and you will have the opportunity to select the games you want to cover in advance. We are flexible with scheduling, but it is extremely important to meet this basic commitment.

You should consider the following when applying for these positions:

  • This is a labor of love for everyone dedicated to the sport and the Dallas Stars. No, we are not paid for this and no, we are not given free tickets for this. But you will have the satisfaction of having your writing read by some of the top people in the Stars organization and you will have the opportunity to be featured on sites like The Dallas Morning News with your name visible throughout the hockey world.
  • Things happen, and life and our real-world jobs (the ones that allow us to be gainfully employed) are priorities for each of us. But this is a commitment to some of your free time, so all we ask is that you let us know if things need to change, and manage your time so that you can contribute on an ongoing basis.

If you are interested, please email [email protected] with a brief description of why you think you are a good fit for the job and which option (or options…?) you would like to be considered for. Even if you are not selected in the first round, we will come back to this list of candidates as future positions open up.

We look forward to hearing from you. Let’s get started!
