Hong Kong’s Olympic delegation met on Wednesday for the first time since the Paris Games to celebrate their historic achievement with the public.
The athletes greeted their fans during a parade in open-top buses that covered various locations across the city, including Tai Wai station in the New Territories, Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon and Central on Hong Kong Island, and then held an exchange session with the students.
At a reception at the government headquarters in the afternoon, Prime Minister John Lee Ka-chiu praised the athletes’ drive and professionalism on the international stage and described them as “heroes” of the Hong Kong people.

Among the participants was fencing gold medalist Vivian Kong Man-wai, who recalled the sudden-death tiebreak in her epic final fight in Paris. The athletes also received a certificate of honor from the mayor.
In Beijing, President Xi Jinping met mainland China’s Olympic heroes at the Great Hall of the People on Tuesday and told them they had “won glory for the country and the people.”
