At 24, Americans appreciate practical gifts for the holidays, according to a new study.

A survey of 2,000 Americans who celebrate the winter holidays by giving or receiving gifts found that 81% prefer to receive gifts that they will actually use throughout the year.

This also includes “healthy” gifts – 77% said that they place more importance on health with the holidays in mind and many are inspired by the topics of health and wellness.

The results showed that 78% would be likely to purchase a healthy gift for a loved one.

This might be a good idea, since the average respondent only uses 43% of the gifts they received last year.

The survey, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Spinbrush, looked not only at Americans’ thoughts on practical gifts, but also at their gift-giving traditions and how the two are connected.

The majority of respondents have a traditional gift each year during the holidays that they either give (61%) or receive (64%) – and many of these gifts proved to be practical.

While candy (47%) was the most popular recurring gift, personal care items (33%) and a toothbrush (32%) also topped the list.

Books (34%) and underwear (30%) were also in the top 10.

But the respondents’ gift-giving traditions go even further: the most popular gift-giving tradition was unwrapping a present on Christmas Eve (45%).

Afterwards, one person was allowed to distribute the presents under the tree (45%) and the presents were unwrapped at midnight on Christmas Day.

The survey found that holiday traditions are important to a whopping 86% of respondents and 84% are happy to continue their family’s traditions.

58 percent of respondents maintain a tradition that has been passed down for generations – a fifth of them continue a tradition that dates back to their great-grandparents or earlier.

“The joy we feel during the holidays wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t maintain traditions, including those we share with our friends and family,” says Dr. Derek Wallin, DDS, Spinbrush Expert at ARM & HAMMER. “For many of us, health and wellness have become more important over the years and so has giving more practical and often healthy gifts, especially when it comes to ideas for small Christmas stocking stuffers.”

Seven out of ten respondents hang stockings in their home, but Santa may have to search for a long time to find them – only 30% hang them on the fireplace or mantel.

Twenty percent hide their stockings in the house, while 19 percent hang them on the banister.

57% say holiday traditions, from stockings and gifts to baking family recipes, make them look forward to the holidays.

“Oral care products are becoming more and more common in Christmas stockings,” says Dr. Derek Wallin, DDS, Spinbrush Expert at ARM & HAMMER. “As a dentist, I love seeing people giving gifts to help their loved ones achieve a healthier, brighter smile.”
