Three people charged in fatal shooting at Lawton birthday party

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – Three people are facing charges in connection with the shooting death of Daveon Smith at a birthday party one week ago today.

Michael Ramone Epps of Lawton and Dejean Shannon of Kennedale, Texas, face charges of first-degree intentional murder and murder, respectively, as well as using a vehicle to discharge a firearm.

Additionally, Michael McKenzie is charged with accessory after the fact for allegedly attempting to help Shannon and Epps evade arrest.

According to court documents, Smith was found in the front seat of a parked car on Northwest 29th Street last Tuesday, August 13, while attending a birthday party.

He later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The arrest affidavit states that 11 empty shell casings were discovered at the crime scene and a medical examiner said five of those shell casings were found in Smith’s body.

Epps was identified through video surveillance of his home, while Shannon was identified through the ankle bracelet provided to him by the court, which placed him at the crime scene.

Both Shannon and Epps face life imprisonment or death.

If McKenzie and Shannon are found guilty, they will receive up to half of the longest prison sentence for both of them.

According to prison records, Shannon is the only person currently in police custody.
