Historic Press Gazette building could become new police headquarters

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Green Bay’s Finance Committee has approved a recommendation to purchase the city’s former Press-Gazette building to be used as the new Green Bay Police Department headquarters.

Mayor Eric Genrich said the recommendation will now be considered by the City Council at its meeting next Tuesday after the city’s Finance Committee unanimously approved it Tuesday.

According to the mayor, there have been maintenance issues with the current Green Bay Police Headquarters on South Adams Street for several years. If approved, the purchase would nearly double the square footage of the police department at the historic Walnut Street location.

Genrich says the building fits the city’s goal of giving police the modernized home they deserve as part of a fiscally responsible plan, but that won’t happen without consultation.

“We are still in the early stages of figuring out the strengths and weaknesses of this building. So we will go through that process and make sure it’s a good fit for us and then ultimately go to our city council and the public and make the case for a larger investment,” said Mayor Genrich.

The mayor also said they are currently at the stage of the process where they are simply seeking approval to purchase the property and then will continue the process from there. Green Bay Police Chief Mark Davis said the new headquarters would also provide the opportunity to provide the community with a more welcoming place than the current location.
