Rapper Lil Jon joins DNC delegates in roll call

Vice President Kamala Harris thanked the delegates who voted for her and Tim Walz to represent the Democratic presidential candidates after a lively ceremonial roll call that included rapper Lil John at the Democratic National Convention.

In the past, nominations have been held in person at the convention. This year, however, Democrats voted virtually, so Tuesday’s vote was largely ceremonial. Still, the excitement was palpable as all delegations made speeches and cast their votes for Harris and Walz as the Democratic nominees.

While an onstage DJ played a mashup of songs associated with each delegation, Alabama began the roll calls with a throwback to President Joe Biden’s home state of Delaware. The throwback was a nod to the president’s legacy, which was a major focus at the DNC on the first night after he decided to end his 2024 re-election campaign.

Meanwhile, it was rapper Lil Jon who caused a sensation when he introduced the Georgia delegates with a somewhat liberated performance of his 2013 hit single “Turn Down For What.”

“From Vice President Harris to the waltz,” he rapped to the cheers of the crowd.

A well-known personality was also present at the roll call in New York: American film director and New York sports fan Spike Lee joined Governor Kathy Hochul and pledged his support to Harris and Walz.

Some familiar faces from the Democratic Party were also seen during the celebratory event, including Kentucky Governors Andy Beshear and Pennsylvania Governor Andy Shapiro, as well as Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.

The roll calls ended with Harris’ home state of California, where Governor Gavin Newsom and U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi were present.

Harris was not in attendance as she was across the state in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for a rally, but she was able to address DNC delegates virtually.

“This isn’t just us versus Donald Trump, it’s about two very different visions for our nation,” Harris told a crowd of cheering supporters. “One is focused on the future. The other is focused on the past. And Wisconsin, we’re fighting for the future.”
