A city council meeting is taking place in Seattle. The council members are sitting at a long, curved desk in a wood-paneled room. On the wall behind them hang the flags of the United States and Washington State, as well as the city seal. A large screen is broadcasting the meeting live. The text on the screen reads: "CITY COUNCIL CB 120812 An Ordinance amending Ordinance 126955, Tuesday, August 13, 2024."

For decades, Seattle’s leading citizens have upheld the expectation that government be civil as a norm that must not be violated. Business leaders insist on it, former City Council member Kshama Sawant was sharply criticized for not adhering to it, and the establishment-backed politicians who run every branch of Seattle’s government claim to value it.

But 2nd District Councilmember Tammy Morales, and by extension the constituents she represents (like myself), seem to be exempt from this widespread belief in decency that is supposedly a cornerstone of Seattle politicians. It’s important to note that Morales earned the responsibility of representing the 2nd District through two successful elections, a feat only one of her colleagues can boast.

Why is the Latino representative of Seattle’s only BIPOC-majority district being subjected to such disrespect? It seems our city’s elected officials expect the rules of decency to apply only if you agree with them.
