Mark Zuckerberg commissioning artist Daniel Arsham to create a 7-foot statue of his wife Priscilla for their garden wasn’t what we predicted would happen in 2024, but here we are. The Facebook CEO is making headlines for “reviving the Roman tradition of creating sculptures of his wife” with a viral Instagram post showing Priscilla next to her metal likeness.
The work depicts Priscilla in oxidized copper paint, standing majestically on a flowing, almost liquid-looking base. A silver shroud is draped over the statue, reaching back like wings. Although Zuckerberg’s take on garden art is unique to say the least, it is not new. There is a long tradition of using sculpture and art to create a focal point and add interest to a garden.
