Australian with surprising talent for gold

The parents of Australia’s youngest Olympic champion made a surprising promise to their daughter if she wins a gold medal in Paris.

14-year-old Arisa Trew achieved a score of 93.18 overnight in the women’s skateboard park, leaving her competitors behind and making it to the top of the podium.

But the gold medal is not the only thing the young skateboarder won after an almost perfect run on the halfpipe; her parents also promised her a pet duck.

“My parents promised me that if I won the gold medal, I could have a pet duck,” she told the Today Show on Wednesday morning.

The skateboarding champion explained that when she returns to Australia, she will take her new pet on “walks and to the skate park.”

Mrs Trew said a pet duck would suit her busy lifestyle as she competes overseas.

“My parents wouldn’t let me have a dog or a cat because we travel so much at the moment,” she said.

“I think it might be a little easier with a duck.”

The young skateboarder said she will keep her new pet duck in a small pond in her backyard.

Ms Trew is Australia’s first medallist in women’s skateboarding and for the first time Japan has not won a gold medal in a women’s skateboarding competition after Ms Trew pulled out all the stops.

Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawke was impressed by the young Australian’s performance.

“She absolutely deserves it. I think she shows what is possible in skateboarding and women’s skateboarding,” he said after her victory.
