Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs “on track” to play Week 1

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — After suffering a hamstring injury during practice last week, Detroit Lions Pro Bowl running back Jahmyr Gibbs is “on track” to play in Week 1, head coach Dan Campbell said.

Campbell expects the second-year star to return to practice next week after Detroit’s final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Aug. 24.

“He’s on the right track,” Campbell said before practice Tuesday. “I wish we could have trained with him more, but as far as his health goes, he’s recovering and on schedule to get back on his feet and we’ll see where he is.”

Gibbs, 22, left the evening practice session on August 12 early to be checked for a leg injury, although it was unclear what happened during the game.

As a rookie in 2023, he played a central role in the offense while rushing for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns, as well as 316 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown.

Detroit has been plagued by injury problems of late, with Pro Bowl tight end Sam LaPorta (hamstring), OT Dan Skipper (ankle), OG Kevin Zeitler (shoulder), LB Malcolm Rodriguez and rookie DBs Terrion Arnold (pec) and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (ankle) all suffering injuries.

However, Campbell expects them to be ready before the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams on September 8.

“Our plan is to get him back going next week,” Campbell said of Gibbs. “He’s on the right track and we’re hoping to get a lot of guys back hopefully the day after the Pittsburgh game, hopefully Sunday. Hopefully they can practice before the Rams next week and then we’ll do the Rams practice.”
