Two projects in the Levittown area have been selected for funding through the PECO Green Region Open Space Program.

PECO announced last week that Bristol Borough and Middletown Township are among 22 regional grant recipients for the 2023-2024 cycle, each of which will receive $10,000 to support specific environmental projects.

In Bristol County, the funds will be used for the Spurline Trail Resurfacing Project. The initiative aims to restore a large portion of the county’s 3-mile multi-use asphalt trail. The trail provides important connections to numerous community centers, including Snyder-Girotti Elementary School, the Grundy Mill Complex and Bristol Borough School District athletic fields, as well as waterfront and residential areas.

The Town of Middletown will direct its grant to the Middletown Community Park Barn solar energy project. The project will focus on installing a rooftop solar array to reduce the cost of electricity for the barn located in the community park – a venue that hosts various recreational programs, art classes and social events throughout the year. The project is part of the Town’s broader goal of meeting 100 percent of the energy needs of its municipal buildings through solar energy.

Since its launch in 2004, the PECO Green Region Open Space Program has distributed over $3 million to more than 400 projects.

The program has supported several projects in collaboration with Natural Lands, including the Sustainable Wissahickon Trails Initiative and Thomas Jefferson University’s recent Park in a Truck initiative.

To celebrate the program’s 20th anniversary, PECO also plans to award a bonus round of grants totaling $50,000. The special funding will support environmental projects that align with PECO’s Path to Clean initiatives and aim to promote a cleaner energy future.
