Woman shocked when she finds cult dress in second-hand shop: “Absolutely not”

A woman was the envy of film fans after she made the ultimate discovery at her local thrift store: the iconic dress from the 2003 romantic comedy How do I get rid of it in 10 days?.

TikTok user @eatsherveggies called it a “lifelong dream” when she walked into her small town’s store and spotted the silky yellow dress made famous by Kate Hudson in the classic flick in which she starred alongside Matthew McConaughey.

One of the film’s most famous scenes features Hudson in the tight, floor-length dress while singing Carly Simon’s song “You’re So Vain.”

So what better song could be the background music for the TikTok user’s secondhand find?

The woman shows off the stunning dress hanging on a clothes rack in a clip shared to her account on July 23 that has nearly 100,000 likes and 1.2 million views.

And, as she puts it, “When you go to your small town thrift store and find ONE OF THE MOST CULTURAL DRESSES OF ALL TIME?!”

She captioned the video “no way,” then showed off the dress in all its glory, even trying it on to make sure it fit perfectly, and calling it a “lifelong dream come true.”

And in a caption tagging actress Hudson and referencing her role in the film, she wrote: “The first time I saw Andie walking down the street in that dress as a kid, it changed my identity forever.”

TikTok users were equally impressed, with one gasping in the comments: “I recognized that immediately!”

“All of us girls wanted to look like this dress,” said another, and one commenter wrote that it would “always be one of my dream dresses.”

“I’m screaming with you,” said one TikToker, adding, “That dress looks amazing on you!”

Responding to a curious commenter, the woman confirmed that the brand was Faviana, but said, “Unfortunately, it’s just a replica.”

She joked that she was convinced that the real dress from the film “is kept in the Smithsonian along with our country’s other most valuable artifacts.”

In the film, Hudson plays journalist Andie Anderson, while her crush McConaughey plays advertising executive Benjamin Barry. While Andie writes an article about how to make a man leave you in 10 days, Ben proves that he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days.

Hudson was nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Performance by an Actress for her role.

The TikTok user, who is now the proud owner of the iconic dress replica, is one of many people interested in thrifting and secondhand clothing, an industry that has seen a huge boom in recent years.

According to Statista, the global market value is estimated to reach $197 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow by another $100 billion by 2026.
