This year has been full of new beginnings for Valerie Bertinelli – from starting a journey of abstinence to unexpected love. And to celebrate the latter, Indulge The cookbook author shared a sweet, candid conversation with her boyfriend Mike Goodnough to wish him a happy birthday and playfully poke fun at their age difference.
In the photo, the two posed selfie-style. Bertinelli gave Goodnough a peck on the cheek and a cloudless sky served as the background. “If there’s one thing about Mike (and there are many things), it’s that he doesn’t like backlighting,” she wrote. “I, on the other hand, find backlighting beautiful. As evidenced by this picture… that Mike took. Sometimes it pays to listen to your elders.”
She continued, “Happy birthday Mike ♥️ You may be a year older but you’re still younger than me. 😆” (Bertinelli is 64 and Goodnough just turned 54.)
Fans found the post adorable and congratulated them both on their committed relationship. “Beautiful couple💞. Bertinelli and Goodnough, a writer and photographer, made their relationship public in April. That same month, Bertinelli revealed People that she was “in love” and that romance discovered her when she least expected it. ““It’s a rollercoaster of emotions because I was determined never to fall in love again,” she said. “I was going to die with my six cats and my dog and spend the rest of my life very happily alone.”
Her relationship with Goodnough started platonically, a friendship that began years ago, and then things evolved. “It’s crazy how comfortable this feels,” she continued. “How new and unexpected this all is. It feels incredibly right.”
Bertinelli believes it was her personal healing process that led her to love. It all started after she divorced her ex-husband Tom Vitale in 2022. “I wanted my life to be different than it was and I wanted to be a whole and emotionally healthy person… I truly thought I had conquered most of my demons,” she wrote on a separate Instagram account dedicated to Goodnough. “Learning to trust again after that trust has been shattered is not an easy thing. These demons want to protect you from ever being vulnerable and emotionally exposed again. This man makes battling the rest of my demons worth it. He is the most thoughtful, kind, gentle, intelligent, funny, and grateful man I have ever met.”
Before Bertinelli married Vitale, she was married to Eddie Van Halen from 1981 to 2007.
