The Blue Supermoon, also called the Sturgeon Supermoon, peaked at 1:17 a.m. on Tuesday. The moon will still be impressive tonight and tomorrow, but its brightness will decrease slightly as it begins to wane. If you missed the peak, these days offer a great chance to see the moon before it returns to its usual phase.

The best observing experience is achieved in places with wide skies and minimal light pollution.

A blue supermoon is a rare astronomical event that combines two lunar phenomena. First, a supermoon occurs when the moon is closest to Earth in its orbit, making it appear larger and brighter than usual. Second, a blue moon is the second full moon within a single calendar month, which is less common. When these two events coincide, we witness the mesmerizing sight of a blue supermoon.

Despite its name, the moon does not actually turn blue during this event. The term “blue moon” simply refers to the unusual timing of the second full moon in a month. However, the combination of the increased brightness of a supermoon and the rarity of a blue moon makes it a truly special celestial spectacle for skywatchers.
