Sony Music Publishing West Africa announces new signings

“We are thrilled to announce that the Legends catalogue has found a new home at Sony Music Publishing,” the company confirmed on social media, adding that the move was part of its vision to “bring the iconic sounds of the Legends to a new generation.”

Fuji music is deeply rooted in Yoruba traditions and the names mentioned above are among its most influential ambassadors in shaping, modernizing and popularizing the genre.

Commenting on the deal, Ayuba, who started singing at the age of seven and is best known for his Bunsue Fuji variation, said: “I have the talent to sing, (but) I don’t have the talent to manage myself. You have to take care of your income, and that’s what Sony is for us. I’m so happy to be with Sony Music Publishing.”

SMPWA also announced that as part of its commitment to honoring the legacy of influential Nigerian artists across all genres, it will now represent the works of the late Nigerian rapper Dagrin.

Dagrin, who died in 2010 at the age of 25, was known for his mix of Yoruba and English rap. He was behind projects such asWe are still on the topic (2006)CEO (Managing Director Omoita) (2009)When I die (2011) and Legends never die, part 1 (2023).

“It was his passion since he was young,” said the musician’s sister, Oluwabukola Olaonipekun, about the partnership. “It was what he loved to do most.”

Asked what the deal means for Dagrin’s legacy, she said: “It’s a great privilege for us. At least we know we’re under one roof and we’re very happy about that. Of course I’m very happy that his songs are not going to die. That’s very encouraging.”

The latest signings add to a growing list since SMP made its foray into West Africa in 2022, opening an office in Lagos, Nigeria, with industry veteran Godwin Tom as managing director. The company’s African artists include Wizkid, Tems, Sarkodie and MOG Beatz.

“Africa has so much talent, culture and uniqueness to share with the rest of the world and I am delighted to be part of this incredible global network of teams that will help create a home for Africa’s best songwriters,” said Tom after his appointment.

Last month, SMP announced that it had signed a deal with Ghanaian label Lynx Entertainment, which includes pop stars such as KiDi, Adina and DJ Vyrusky, as well as new voices Kasar, Maya Blu and DSL.

Other recent SMP signings include Nigerian pop singer Ric Hassani, gospel singer and songwriter Kachi Annuncia and producer and sound engineer SiGNAL.
