Even the detectives, who had no love for Scott from the start, admitted on the Peacock series that they were stunned when they found out that Laci’s husband was having an affair.
“That really surprised me,” said the former Modesto police detective. Jon Buehlerwho worked with Brocchini on the case, said on the show. He remembered thinking, “Now things are starting to take shape.”
Scott has no real explanation for why he cheated on his pregnant wife (“childish, lack of self-esteem, selfish,” he said as some reasons for his decision), but he said he “certainly” regretted it.
He called the accusation that he killed Laci because he simply did not want to be a husband or father “so insulting and so disgusting.”
When asked why he continued to talk to Amber in a romantic tone after Laci’s disappearance, Scott said on the show that he was trying to draw the police’s attention to the search for his wife.
“I thought I should stay in touch with Amber,” he told Shareen, “so she wouldn’t come into the picture, complicate it, or ruin the search.”
He described the prospect that the police might find out about his affair as “a time bomb.”
And when the world found out, Scott said, he “became a total asshole for having sex outside of our marriage.”
