Mesa Mayor John Giles will speak at the 2024 Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, telling Republican voters nationally why Vice President Kamala Harris deserves their support.

It was not immediately clear when Giles would take the stage. The convention began Monday in Chicago and will be streamed live on the website from 4 to 8 p.m. Arizona time (7 to 11 p.m. Eastern) through Thursday.

“The stakes in this election are clear, and I plan to do everything in my power to elect the vice president, including speaking at the Democratic National Convention and making my case directly to my Republican colleagues,” Giles said in a written statement.

He will be joined by other former Republican representatives from across the country who will deliver speeches at the convention.

Giles came into the national spotlight after crossing party lines and supporting Harris’s run for the White House.

It began on July 29, when Giles wrote a guest column in the Arizona Republic and made his arguments in a series of radio interviews nationwide. Giles was named co-chair of the Arizona Republican Committee for Harris.

He was the only Republican to speak at Harris’ campaign rally in Glendale on August 9.

Giles is a registered Republican but holds nonpartisan office and has never been elected as a Republican. Yet he is the most prominent Republican still in office in Arizona who publicly supports Harris.

He ends his ten-year uninterrupted term as mayor of Arizona’s third-largest city.
