Alicia Silverstone fans beg for health update after she posts video of herself eating ‘poisonous’ fruit

Alicia Silverstone’s fans are worried about her well-being after the actress apparently ate a poisonous plant.

Silverstone is currently in the UK and shared a video on TikTok of something she discovered while wandering the streets of what appears to be London.

In the video posted yesterday (August 19), she told her followers: “I just discovered something and I can’t figure out what it is and I need your help.”

The 47-year-old continued: “I just bit into it because it was lying on the street and we were discussing whether it was a tomato or not.”

However, Silverstone went on to explain that it was “definitely not” a tomato as the leaves of the plant it came from were present as she panned the camera around to show people.

Silverstone took another bite of one of the tomato-like fruits and admitted that she hadn’t really thought she was supposed to eat it. She described it as a type of pepper.

Although the video was posted just a few hours ago, Silverstone’s clip has already been viewed over 630,000 times at the time of writing.

The comments section is full of suggestions as to what plant it could be, with many saying it is something known as Jerusalem cherry (also known as Solanum pseudocapsicum).

These plants from the nightshade family are not uncommon in the UK and although they bear fruit, the fruit is not suitable for consumption.

“The Jerusalem cherry is a member of the nightshade family, a large and diverse plant family that includes both poisonous species and food crops such as potatoes, eggplants and tomatoes,” explains the website The Joy Of Plants.

“The shrub is native to Central America, where the plant is so vigorous that it is sometimes considered a weed.”

Regarding toxicity, the website states that the berries are poisonous and that Jerusalem artichokes should be “used only as an ornamental plant and kept out of the reach of small children and pets.”

With this in mind, some have expressed concern about Silverstone’s well-being and urged the actress to give her fans an update so they know she is OK.

One person wrote: “LADY! UPDATE US. ARE YOU ALIVE AND WELL!?!”

A second said: “Oh my god NO!! The Jerusalem cherry is very poisonous and is part of the nightshade family. Hope you’re ok.”

And someone else insisted: “Is Alicia okay??? We need an update!”

UNILAD has contacted Silverstone representatives for comment.
