Croatia Airlines investigates A321XLR as part of long-term fleet plans

Croatia Airlines is exploring the benefits of the Airbus A321XLR, which would potentially enable flights to distant markets. However, the airline points out that such developments are in the “distant future”. The airline’s CEO Jasmin Bajić recently said: “In the long term, aircraft such as the A321XLR could be considered, but that is a possibility in the distant future. However, we will always continue to look for new opportunities.” The A321XLR is currently in production and received certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency last month. The first A321XLR made its maiden flight in June 2022, which was followed by an extensive test program with three test aircraft. More than 500 Airbus A321XLRs have been ordered so far. Iberia will be the launch customer, with the jet scheduled to enter service in November.

Croatia Airlines has ruled out any long-haul operations in the near future. Mr Bajić recently noted: “Croatia Airlines’ current and future fleet is designed for regional intra-European traffic. Our main task is to ensure connectivity within Croatia and maintain connections to international destinations all year round. Given Croatia’s tourism-driven economy, we also reserve capacity for strategic leisure routes, even during the winter months when other airlines may not operate.” He added: “Throughout the summer season, we emphasize connectivity while celebrating our two decades of membership in Star Alliance. This alliance allows us to provide significant capacity to Star Alliance hubs, thus providing access to a wider range of destinations than would be possible with our standalone operations. While overseas markets play a significant role in Croatia Airlines’ overall traffic, we value efficient connections via our Star Alliance and codeshare partners.”

The A321XLR is a narrow-body aircraft with long-range capabilities, allowing airlines to use the aircraft on long-haul routes. It offers airlines the flexibility to expand capacity or open new routes with variable demand. Christian Scherer, CEO of the Commercial Aircraft Business at Airbus, said: “The A321XLR expands the possibilities for our airline customers and passengers. With its long range, the A321XLR enables a variety of new direct routes and offers our customers and travelers natural growth opportunities. It offers airlines the efficiency of commonality within the A320/A321 product range and its versatile cabin a range of service options that are simply unique.”
