Nonprofits are in uproar after United Way announces it will cut donations

ROCHESTER, NY — Local nonprofits are desperate for funds after the United Way of Rochester announced it will cut donations starting next year.

Now, 16 of these nonprofits have joined forces to express concern about the impact these cuts will have on Rochester and the people they serve.

These nonprofits say that without this funding, the entire Rochester community will be affected – from individuals to other nonprofits. According to a letter from the local nonprofits, up to 40,000 individuals or households could be affected by these cuts.

Salvation Army officials say every local nonprofit helps the others. Cutting funding from even one nonprofit can be like taking a leg out of a table — they rely on each other to keep the system balanced for those who need it.

“It’s an infrastructure of nonprofits that serve Rochester. And, you know, one of them is Foodlink – the only food bank here in Monroe County… and Foodlink was also cut from the United Way – it just shows that we don’t help in a vacuum, right? We help together as a local community of nonprofits. And, you know, now that some of the nonprofits that receive food from Foodlink have been cut and then Foodlink itself has been cut, it obviously just exacerbates the problem,” said Major Rick Starkey, director of operations for the Salvation Army of Rochester.

The Salvation Army and other nonprofits say they are now looking for more donations and funding to get what they need.
