ENC party members comment on the start of the DNC

PITT COUNTY, NC (WITN) – Monday is the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, will present their plans and visions for the future of America.

Delegates from Pitt County, including North Carolina House of Representatives 9th District candidate Claire Kempner, traveled to the Windy City this weekend ahead of the DNC kickoff. She said she was ready to make history alongside delegates from all fifty states.

“This convention will be a great opportunity for our party and our candidates to tell our story directly to the American people, a story of what we have accomplished as Democrats, and a story of what is at stake in this election,” Kempner said.

The convention comes four weeks after US President Joe Biden decided to drop out of the race and endorse Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee. Harris had selected Walz as her vice presidential nominee two weeks ago. The two will lay out many of their policy views during the convention on issues such as abortion and inflation, which will be key to voters in the upcoming election.

The DNC’s theme for this week is “For the People, For Our Future.” Local Republicans listen intently, and some are curious about what the theme really means to Democrats.

“When you say ‘for the people,’ are you making a decision for me that is best for me?” asked Carolyn Garris, chairwoman of the Beaufort County Republicans. “Or are you including me in that decision-making process? That is very concerning. It should be ‘we the people,’ we are the ones who elect you.”

Throughout the week, numerous Democratic leaders will take the DNC podium, starting with President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday.

Former President Barack Obama, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and former First Lady Michelle Obama will also speak this week.

Governor Walz is expected to deliver his acceptance speech on Wednesday and Vice President Harris will close the convention with her speech on Thursday.
