Although the names of the brother-sister duo were kept secret at the family’s request, they have become an inspiration to organ donors.

For a 43-year-old woman from South Goa, the Raksha Bandhan festival became extra special because her younger brother gave her a new life earlier this year by donating one of his kidneys.

The woman, who suffered from polycystic kidney disease, received a kidney from her 35-year-old brother at a private hospital in April.

Although the names of the brother-sister duo were kept secret at the family’s request, they served as inspiration for organ donors.

“My wife was touched when she tied a rakhi on her brother. They have been ideal siblings since childhood,” said the woman’s husband.

A nephrologist at the private hospital said the woman was suffering from polycystic kidney disease and was in the end stage, so a transplant was urgently needed.

The patient’s younger brother, who is married, was willing to donate his kidney. He was initially treated for kidney stones and after obtaining the necessary permissions, the organ was donated through the laparoscopic kidney donation method, the doctor said.
