Kamala Harris accepts nomination at four-day Democratic Party convention

Washington, August 19. US Vice President Kamala Harris will receive the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee at a four-day convention that begins in Chicago on Monday. President Joe Biden will head the opening day speakers’ list.

This was supposed to be a convention where Biden would accept the nomination in a speech traditionally given on the fourth and final day. But in a turn of events rare in US politics, he dropped out of the race under party pressure and endorsed his deputy as his successor on the ballot. He will be the opening day speaker, passing the baton to Harris, who officially became the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate on August 6 after receiving a majority of votes in virtual voting.

Former President Donald Trump and his running mate Senator JD Vance accepted their nominations for president and vice president in July at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, just two days after Trump survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. He was shot in the right ear and wore a bandage on it throughout the convention.

The organizers of the Democratic Party Convention have announced separate themes for the four days: Monday is “For the People,” Tuesday is “A Bold Vision for America’s Future,” Wednesday is “A Fight for Our Freedoms,” and Thursday is “For Our Future.”

First Lady Jill Biden will also be among the speakers on Monday. In his speech, President Biden will champion Harris, highlight the key achievements of his administration and portray Trump as a threat to democracy. He will likely be greeted enthusiastically by delegates, with the slogan he was greeted with for the first time at a recent event: “Thank you, Joe.”

Speakers on the second day on Tuesday include former President Bill Clinton and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff.

Clinton was among the first Democratic politicians to endorse Harris after Biden dropped out of the race and threw his support behind the vice president. Hillary Clinton, the former Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, is also among the speakers.

The keynote speakers on the third day on Wednesday are former President Barack Obama, who remains a major star of the Democratic Party, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who will accept his nomination for vice president. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will also speak at the convention.

The dominant event of the final day on Thursday will be Harris’ acceptance speech.
