Brian Cox calls superhero films a “party time” for talented actors

Brian Cox has a new “hot opinion” and calls superhero movies the main cause of the decline of cinema.

The party season is not going so well for Brian Cox. Deadpool and Wolverine easily exceeds the 1 billion dollar mark at the worldwide box office, a certain Brian Cox – who himself is very proud of his role as William Stryker in X2 – criticizes the comic book adaptation as a whole and takes aim at one of the biggest hits of 2024.

Speaking to an audience at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (via THR), Brian Cox said the art form of film has gone in the wrong direction, especially when compared to television. “What’s happened is that television is doing what cinema used to do… I think cinema is doing very badly. I think it’s lost its place, partly because of the grandiose element between Marvel, DC and all that. And I think it’s actually starting to implode. You kind of lose the plot.”

Since the launch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron-Man in 2008 (the year in which The Dark Knight Rises in fact, the cash register dominated) only three years not have seen one comic book movie in the top 10 worldwide – and two of them either didn’t hit theaters or were directly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But Brian Cox has been around long enough to know why people keep going to multiplexes. “(They) make a lot of money, which makes everyone happy, but as far as the work goes, it all gets watered down afterward. You always get the same thing… I mean, I’ve done (projects) like that.” with reference to the above X2He added: “It’s just become a party for certain actors to do these things. When you know that Hugh Jackman can do a little bit more, Ryan Reynolds… but that’s because they’re going down that path and it’s box office. They make a lot of money. You can’t underestimate that.”

Brian Cox has never been one to hide his opinion on pretty much anything to do with the industry. Whether it’s criticizing the modernization of James Bond, criticizing Joaquin Phoenix for his “terrible” performance as Napoleon or, yes, even how his own character in ConsequenceCox has as many takes as you’d expect, so it’s absolutely no surprise that he’s having trouble with the titans of the box office.

Brian Cox is obviously not the only one who accepts bribes… But what is your opinion on this issue? Are comic book adaptations just an excuse for actors to make huge salaries?
