A city press release states that Stockton creatives can apply for up to $10,000 each in city funds this fall for projects that engage the public in art.

The Stockton Arts Grant aims to support public access to the arts and “the learning of the arts at all stages of life, as well as the integration of the arts into the everyday life of our communities,” according to the grant’s guidelines.

Arts organizations could also charge up to $10,000, and nonprofit arts organizations could charge up to $20,000, the press release said.

The money is paid out by Stockton’s Arts Commission and can be used for any art form, from folk crafts to literature to opera, the guidelines say.

According to The Record, funded projects included a music video festival for students, stained glass classes, and restoration and mural work at the Bob Hope Theater.

Also included were visual art and performances at this year’s Flavor Fest, organized by Visit Stockton, as well as a coloring book featuring historical scenes from the city, according to grant guidelines.

“100% of our grants went directly to local artists for art workshops, pop-up art, art demos, live music and cultural performances,” Wes Rhea, CEO of Visit Stockton, said in an email Thursday.

“Without the support, we would not have been able to offer these free experiences to the public at Flavor Fest this year.”

Artists and organizations must apply online by Sept. 27, the city’s news release said. Grants can be up to $10,000, but most are between $1,000 and $5,000, it said. They can be used for production, exhibition, rental and marketing costs, materials and compensation for artists.

A total of $100,000 is available, the press release states.

The art commissioners plan to review the proposals between the end of September and October and recommend recipients on November 4, the press release states.

The application requirements, including the checklist that the contracting authorities use to evaluate the proposed projects, can be viewed here.
