James Cameron reveals the title of Avatar 3 at D23

“Avatar 3” is officially called “Avatar: Fire and Ashes.” James Cameron traveled to Anaheim on Saturday to appear at Disney’s D23 convention and introduce the title “Avatar 3” to an audience of 15,000.

The sequel follows 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel to 2009’s Avatar that was ten years in the making. The second Avatar film grossed over $2.3 billion at the box office and ensured that Cameron’s intention to complete the franchise with four sequels is likely to come to fruition.

“It’s so satisfying to feel this love for this world of Pandora and these characters that my team has been working on for over 18 years,” Cameron said at D23. “I can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on for Avatar 3. Every day when I review new footage, it’s like Christmas. The characters are so alive and everything feels so real. As you’d expect, it’s this crazy adventure, but the stakes are also high emotionally, more so than ever before. We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love. There are new characters, one in particular that we think you’ll love – or love to hate.”

Cameron added: “You will see much more of Pandora, the planet, than you have ever seen before.”

“Avatar 3” was shot at the same time as “The Way of Water,” so Cameron and Co. have been deep into post-production for years.

“Avatar: Fire and Ashes” will be released in theaters on December 25, 2025 by Disney’s 20th Century Studios.
