In her last five years as Michigan governor, Gretchen Whitmer has had to battle a pandemic, a rise in domestic terrorism and more. Now she hopes to recount some of her experiences in a new book with a mission to encourage readers to “make a change.”

True Gretch: What I Learned About Life, Leadership, and Everything in Between will be published this summer by Simon & Schuster.

According to a press release from the publisher, the story will follow Whitmer’s life and career – from the lessons she learned from her grandmother Nino to her kidnapping and assassination attempt in 2020.

“At this moment, our world is thirsty for compassion, empathy, big ideas and the courage to get things done,” Whitmer said in a statement.

“No matter who you are or what you want to accomplish, I hope this book helps you find the good and use it to make a difference. I will do the same with you.”

True GretchDescribed by the publisher as an “unconventionally honest, personal and funny account” of the politician’s life and work, it will follow Whitmer’s time as a lawyer, her efforts as governor during the COVID-19 pandemic, her fight to protect reproductive rights and her motto (“get s— done”).

“We have watched Whitmer forge a highly successful path in these divisive times, and we are thrilled to publish her book,” said Mindy Marques, vice president and editor in chief at Simon & Schuster, in a press release.

“She is one of those rare politicians who can make a difference and find humor in politics, and her first book is as unconventional as she is.”

The book will also include some humorous remarks from the politician, and net proceeds from the title’s publication will be donated to the Capital Region Community Foundation for the remainder of her term as governor.

News of her new book comes seven months after the final three of the 14 men charged for their involvement in the alleged attempted kidnapping of Whitmer at her Antrim County vacation home in 2020 were found not guilty. The men were arrested in October 2020 along with 11 others – five of whom have since been found guilty by a jury on their respective charges, and four of them reportedly pleaded guilty to less serious charges.

“I think about the fact that I am in danger everywhere I go,” Whitmer said on Who is speaking to Chris Wallace? in March 2023. “The former president made me a target and poured a lot of fuel on the fire, and it continues to burn. And I think about it everywhere I go.”

She continued: “There are times when I’m in public – and I have the largest police force in the world – but sometimes there are large crowds and that’s what crosses my mind.”

True Gretch: What I Learned About Life, Leadership, and Everything in Between arrives on July 9th.
