Artwork for Frozen 3 revealed, release date for 2027 confirmed at D23

In early 2023, when the Walt Disney Company was suffering from a series of failures – and the box office flops of The miracles And Wish were still on the horizon – CEO Bob Iger took the microphone during a conference call and said You can bet that we have a Frozen 3. OK, not an exact quote. It was a bit more formal. But still, Disney returned to the Arendelle fountain for a guaranteed hit.

Now we have confirmation: Announced at the D23 Expo, Frozen 3 is officially in the works and on the release calendar for 2027. And it is being developed as a two-part story, with Frozen 4 also in progress.

The film’s concept art suggests that the finished product could be a major departure from the icy blues of the past. In fact, it looks like a cel straight out of 1959. Sleeping Beauty.

In 2013, the first Frozen became an instant phenomenon for Walt Disney Animation, spawning short films, theme park attractions and a Broadway musical. A sequel was not necessarily planned – Disney traditionally left the “Part 2” business to its home video studios – but in the current blockbuster environment, it also seemed inevitable. It took Disney just two years to Frozen 2 in the calendar for 2019, alongside a record year that included Avengers: Endgame And Toy Story 4.

There were few words about Frozen III since the sequel, and the D23 presentation was light on plot details. But impressive artwork gives the film potential in a sea of sequels, and a release date a few years from now means the artistic team behind it won’t be under any pressure to finish it. Frozen 2 This was a notoriously challenging production. The sequel could be something very special if Disney allows it.
