The original from 1980 Shogun miniseries is superior to the Emmy-nominated FX/Hulu series in one important respect. While Shogun was originally planned as a 10-part miniseries based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by James Clavell, but the overwhelming success and popularity of the series inspired FX, Hulu and creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo to expand the story to additional seasons. Shogun received a near-perfect critics rating of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and is set for a big night at the Emmys, which will take place on September 15, 2024.

Shogun was adapted as a miniseries in 1980 starring Richard Chamberlain and Toshirô Mifune. Like the critically acclaimed series of 2024, Shogun received excellent reviews and was generally considered one of the best series of the year of its release. 1980s Shogun won a total of 3 Emmys in 1981 after an impressive 14 nominations, including Outstanding costume design for a series, outstanding graphic design and title sequences, and outstanding miniseries.

It is the only American television series filmed entirely in Japan. The acclaimed HBO/Max series Tokyo Vice starring Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe was mostly filmed in Japan, but also in some other locations like Toronto, Canada, which in the 1980s Shogun to maintain its exclusive status.


Because 1980s Shogun was the first American television production to be shot entirely in Japanit was groundbreaking in and of itself. Due to the social context and standards of westernized entertainment of the time, the 1980s Shogun relied more heavily on Chamberlain’s character as a reliable narrator and access point for the American audience. A series like 2024 Shogun A more universal perspective would probably not have satisfied audiences at the time.

Although 2024 Shogun is widely considered to be one of the best series of 2024, the fact that it was mostly filmed in Canada compromises its authenticity compared to the 1980s version. Perhaps due to the success of the modern adaptations and the ways that HBO’s Tokyo Vicewhich was recently cancelled to the disappointment of its loyal fans, Shogun Season 2, like its predecessor from 1980, can actually be filmed in Japan. Shogun is currently the favorite to take home the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series this September.
