Hamakua Hotel opens on Big Island of Hawaii: Travel Weekly

The 25-acre, eight-room Hamakua Hotel celebrated its grand opening last month on the east coast of Hawaii’s Big Island, property officials said.

Located 11 miles north of Hilo on a 100-foot sea bluff on the Hamakua Coast, the hotel features three room categories that include private ocean-view porches, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, as well as breakfast, happy hour cocktails and multi-course dinners, according to a July 23 press release.

“We are extremely excited to welcome visitors to the best hotel experience on the Hamakua Coast,” said co-owner Eric Lochtefeld in the press release. “We have assembled an incredibly talented and hospitable team whose priority is to provide our guests with an exceptional stay with seamless service and the spirit of aloha.”

Lochtefeld and his wife Lori bought the property – formerly the Palms Cliff House bed and breakfast – in 2020 and spent $1.5 million renovating it, according to the boutique hotel’s website.

The Hamakua Hotel also offers body and wellness spa treatments, and according to the July press release, work is underway on an oceanfront infinity pool, scheduled to open this fall.
