FIRE AND ASHES: First concept drawings to be revealed at D23

Avatar Director James Cameron was joined by stars Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington at D23 to confirm (via SFFGAzette.com) that the highly anticipated third installment in the epic sci-fi series is titled Avatar: Fire and Ashes.

No new footage was shown at the event, but the filmmaker promised that “You’re going to see a lot more of Pandora than you’ve seen before. It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also very emotional. We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”

“There are new cultures, locations, creatures and new biomes,” added Cameron. “You’ll see a lot more of Pandora, the planet, than you’ve ever seen before. The new movie isn’t what you expect, but it’s definitely what you want.”

Avatar: Fire and Ashes was filmed back to back with 2022 Avatar: The Way of Water; Cameron originally planned to shoot both in one film, but he soon realized that there was too much material and expanded the story into a second and third part (a fourth part is also planned).

In the third part, Jake and Neytiri will meet the “Ash People”, a new clan of the Na’vi. In a final taste, the prolific director added: “There are new characters, and one in particular I think you’ll love – or love to hate.”

Cameron dedicated his career to Avatar The franchise has been running for nearly two decades now, and for fans of the ambitious sci-fi franchise, exploring more of Pandora is an exciting prospect. And for Disney, it likely means another big box office hit next Christmas.

Oona Chaplin (game of Thrones) plays the leader of the Ash People, Varang. David Thewlis and Michelle Yeoh join the cast alongside returning stars Worthington, Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco and Dileep Rao.

Cameron, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver wrote Avatar: Fire and Ashes and at D23 it was confirmed that the film is still scheduled for release on December 19, 2025.
