Downtown Tampa’s growth story continues. My first job was downtown, and since I first started eating out for lunch 20 years ago, downtown has come a long way. There’s a mix of newcomers and classic establishments that continue to revitalize the area. Here are my recommendations for places to eat when you visit downtown Tampa.

Little Tina: The newest coffee shop and cafe in downtown Tampa with the same ownership as Urban Cantina, a Mexican restaurant nearby. The coffee is made fresh and they also serve drinks during the day. The food is mostly simple breakfast dishes like croissants and avocado toast. Most people come to relax and hang out with friends. I see a lot of potential for this concept. 507 N Tampa St, Tampa, FL 33602.

Eddie & Sam’s NY Style Pizza: One of the best pizza places in Tampa with reliable service and high-quality pizza. They have expanded their menu to include takeout and delivery through third-party apps. Water is imported from New York to replicate the flavor of the dough as closely as possible. There’s nothing better than a delicious slice of pizza on a bad day. 203 E Twiggs St, Tampa, FL 33602.

Anchor & Brine: One of my favorite stops on the Tampa Riverwalk with great views of the river and Harbor Island at the Tampa Marriott Water Street. Anchor & Brine offers a full American menu with a variety of shareable appetizers and entrees. I keep it pretty simple and usually order the burger. They are open fairly late and have friendly staff. 505 Water St, Tampa, FL 33602.

Beacon: The rooftop restaurant and lounge at the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street offers one of my favorite views of the city of Tampa. I’ve always wondered why there aren’t more Florida sunset viewing spots in Tampa. While all the drinks are excellent, what I like most about the Beacon is the more grown-up atmosphere and ambiance and the excellent food. The menu is creative, exciting, and always hits the nail on the head despite the small portions. I love the space itself for events or birthday parties. Don’t miss the Pomme Pave and the Surf & Turf Dumplings. 510 Water St, Tampa, FL 33602.

Columbia Cafe: The Columbia Cafe in the Tampa Bay History Center on the Tampa Riverwalk has long been a favorite of my family. The water views are unmissable, but of course we also love the famous 1905 salad and sandwiches on the menu. And the sangria is not to be missed either. We have always preferred this spot. 801 Water St #1905, Tampa, FL 33602.

Flatbread & Butter: This cafe concept recently expanded from St. Petersburg to Tampa and is already making a splash, first by introducing espresso tonics to the area and then slowly rolling out a brunch and soon lunch menu. The baristas are friendly and they source their ingredients from Bandit Coffee in St. Petersburg, which is an interesting choice. I’m a fan. 101 W Tyler St, Tampa, FL 33602.

Naked Farmer: When I’m looking for something healthy, Naked Farmer is always my first choice. There are a number of healthy bowl concepts in the area, but Naked Farmer simply tastes exquisite and sources its ingredients from local Florida farmers. One of the best additions to Water Street. 1001 Water St, Tampa, FL 33602.

The Pearl: One of the most popular restaurants on Water Street, owned by the same owner as Ocean Prime, Pearl offers a variety of seafood and delicious desserts, as well as a well-curated drinks menu. I love the lounge because it sounds very New York and the dining area feels very lively. The house-smoked salmon is not to be missed. 823 Water St C100, Tampa, FL 33602.

Boulon Brasserie: Certainly one of the classiest restaurants in town, Boulon offers a modern take on French and American cuisine. The brunch is not to be missed and in the cooler months I love eating on the patio. The staff is always very friendly and if I’m alone I even like to go to the bar and eat. The high price makes it only suitable for special occasions, but it’s a nice addition to Water Street and downtown Tampa. If you’re looking for something simple, I really like the French onion soup. 1001 Water St, Tampa, FL 33602.

Shortwave coffee: A modern coffee chain from up north has set up shop in Sparkman Wharf on Water Street. The drip coffees and tea are both pretty good. They sell plenty of coffee accessories and there’s spacious seating for those who want to get some work done during the day. It’s no better than the local shops in North Hyde Park or Ybor City, but not a bad choice if you’re in the area. Wi-Fi is free too. 615 Channelside Dr Suite 106, Tampa, FL 33602.

Si-am Thai American: If you’re looking for a traditional Thai concept that will satisfy your curry, noodle or rice needs, look no further than Si-am. Their Thai tea is also excellent and right next to the historic Tampa Theater, they serve quick lunch and dinner. 713 N Franklin St, Tampa, FL 33602.

Malio’s Prime Steakhouse: Malio’s has lasted generations in Tampa, and a visit to their restaurant or nearby bar will quickly remind you why. The staff is friendly and professional. The food is impeccably prepared. The drink menu will satisfy any palate and is both classic and forward-thinking. If you’re looking for something simple, I recommend the Downtown Burger. 400 N Ashley Dr, Tampa, FL 33602.
