Moose Lodge hosts Port Huron Float Down watch party

Moose Lodge is hosting a party for members and friends to enjoy the sights and sounds of today’s Float Down.

The lodge, 3520 Military St., opens at 10 a.m. Gary Maas, vice president of the lodge, said participants must register with a Moose member. There is no admission fee and food and drinks are available for purchase.

“They come down, they eat, they have a good tie and it helps support the lodge so we can help support the community,” Maas said. “The most important reason is we can help the community.”

While you can join in and watch thousands float down the St. Clair River and listen to a band, the hut is only permitted as an emergency exit for swimmers.

“Parking and seating are limited. Everything is on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you want a spot, you’ll need to get there early. Carpooling is highly encouraged. Valid ID and proper attire (shirts, shoes, swimsuits) are required,” the party’s Facebook event page states.

The unauthorized float down starts for swimmers at Lighthouse Beach in Port Huron and ends 7.5 miles south at Chrysler Beach in Marysville.

Coast Guard officials urged residents not to attend the event.

Maas said the Port Huron Lodge is the largest in the state, with about 3,050 members. He said anyone who wants to become a member can simply stop by and ask for an application and a sponsor.
