Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter would have turned 97 on Sunday

ATLANTA, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter would have celebrated her 97th birthday on Sunday.

Rosalynn Carter died on November 19 at the age of 96. Her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, has been in hospice care since February 2023. The former president celebrates his 100th birthday on October 1.

In Plains, Georgia, the Carters’ hometown, events honoring the former first lady were held over the weekend, including a special service at the church she and her husband attended for many years, reports Atlanta News First sister station WALB.

The Carter Center hosted a free family day and book giveaway on Saturday to honor the life and legacy of Rosalynn Carter.

Georgia Rep. Nikema Williams, who is also chair of the Georgia Democratic Party, attended the event before flying to Chicago for the Democratic National Convention, which begins on Monday.

Williams said Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign represents many of the Carter Center’s values.

“This election cycle with our new Democratic candidate is about joy,” Williams said. “It’s about bringing people together and creating community, and that’s exactly what the Carter Center does.”
