Carlos Prates received a $50,000 bonus for his powerful knockout of Li Jingliang at UFC 305 on Saturday.
However, if the UFC executives responsible for the bonus selection had seen a photo of Colin Murty’s knockout moment in Perth, Australia, before making their decision, they might have been inclined to give Prates even more – or give Murty a little something.
The Shooter
Photojournalist Murty, who shot for Getty Images through Agence France-Presse, has an extensive resume that stretches back more than 40 years, but you won’t find much MMA on his resume. That’s why those who appreciate good photography – especially good sports photography – will love this shot even more.
(And if you’re going to say, “Oh, he probably just has a really good camera,” please don’t. He does. Of course he does. And he also has the eye and instincts that can lead to an amazing image like this. Most of us don’t, no matter how much our iPhones lie to us #SupportRealPhotographers.)
The fight
Prates opened the pay-per-view main card with a stunning walk-off knockout of Jingliang late in the second round. It was the first time in his 17-year career that “The Leech” had been knocked out.

Absurd, isn’t it?
Prates’ victory was his tenth in a row – the last nine of which have been by knockout, including his first three in the UFC.
