Knicks bring back talented combo forward in two-way deal

New York Knicks forward Jacob Toppin (00) blocks a shot by Boston Celtics defenseman DJ Steward (26) during the second half at Madison Square Garden.

The New York Knicks recently brought back one of their most promising young talents from the NBA and G League.

The Knicks signed another Exhibit 10 two-way deal with forward Jacob Toppin on Wednesday The Knicks shared the news on their official PR X page Earlier this week:

Knicks: Jacob Toppin had a strong G-League season despite a quiet style of play in the NBA team

NBA: Preseason – Boston Celtics at New York Knicks, Jacob Toppin

Toppin had a strong 2023-24 season for the Westchester Knicks of the NBA G League. The 6’8″, 200lb combo forward averaged 19.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.1 blocks and 0.9 steals per game while shooting 48.2 percent from the field in 25 games played.

When he played for the NBA Knicks, the 24-year-old didn’t get enough playing time to show what he was capable of. Toppin only played in nine games, averaging 4.2 minutes per night and scoring 1.4 points on 55.6 percent shooting from the field.

Toppin will fight for his time as the Knicks’ backup forward again in 2024-25

New York is absolutely well-positioned at the forward position. OG Anunoby and All-Star Julius Randle occupy the starting positions at small forward and power forward, respectively. Chuma Okeke and Keita Bates-Diop are available as backup combo forward options, as well as Precious Achiuwa, who can move to the four. Nevertheless, Toppin will have the chance to fight for a spot on New York’s bench next season.

The undrafted talent from the class of 2023 will be playing on his second Exhibit 10 contract of his career. The Knicks will benefit from having a promising player like him in their ranks, especially given the wave of injuries that plagued the roster last season. He will look to earn significant playing time in Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau’s rotation for the first time in 2024-25.

The Knicks are considered the No. 1 contender to win the East next season behind the defending champions
