Kamala Harris tells the story behind her childhood photo and says: “If I am elected president…”

With only one week left until she is officially announced as the Democratic US presidential candidate in Chicago, Vice President Kamala Harris promised on August 18 that if elected president, she would cut costs and increase economic security for all Americans.

Harris also noted that she understands what Americans in a middle-class household go through to raise their children and provide for the family.

She wrote to X: “I grew up in a middle-class household. We rented for most of my childhood. My mother saved for over a decade to buy a house. I was a teenager when the day finally came – and I can still remember how excited she was. In college, I worked at McDonald’s to make money. Some of the people I worked with raised their families on that salary. They worked a second or even third job to pay rent and buy food. That only gets harder as the cost of living increases.”

“If elected president, I will make reducing costs and increasing economic security for all Americans one of my top priorities,” she added.

Along with the caption, she also shared a childhood photo of herself, her younger sister and her mother.

Apart from that, Harris claimed that America was ready to elect a black woman as president.

At the beginning of 2019, when she was running against Joe Biden in the presidential primary, she said: “Throughout my career, I’ve heard people say when I was running… people weren’t ready, their time hadn’t come yet, no one like her had done it before.”

“I was not listening and I would suggest that no one should listen to this kind of conversation,” she added.

If Harris succeeds in defeating Donald Trump in November, she would be the first woman and second black person to head a leading world power after Barack Obama.

Harris is married to Douglas Emhoff and is raising his two children from a previous marriage to Emhoff; she has no biological children of her own.
